Photos and words by Dylan H. Brown. Just outside of Escalante, only a short 5-mile drive down the Hole-in-the-Rock Road, tucked in the expansive sedimentary rock of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is one of the most stunning slot canyons around, Zebra Canyon.

Jan 25, 2018 · Zebra Slot Canyon is located off of Hole in the Rock Road, near Escalante, UT. Zebra slot Canyon is definitely an interesting geologic feature. I don't recommend hiking through it alone, because there is opportunity to fall and become dangerously lodged in the slot. While the zebra slot is interesting, I'm not sure it's worth the hike to get to it, unless you're visiting zebra slot simply as part of your overall excursion. The Escalante slot canyons are for the most part smaller drainages, tributaries of the main gorges, and there are many dozen if not several hundred of them - ranging from the quite long but not especially enclosed (eg Little Death Hollow, Llewellyn Gulch, Red Breaks) to extreme slots so narrow that traversing requires stemming sometimes as much as 50 feet above the floor, in conjunction with the usual downclimbing, rappelling, wading and swimming. It was only a short 300 feet to the end of the slot but the end is very colorful and a stunning sight to see. Already looking forward to going again!

Zebra Slot canyon was a very strenuous hike but well worth it. Hiking in the views are similar to surrounding area, pretty but not fascinating.
